Square Enix also has chosen a subtitle that they still refuse to reveal!
Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy Game Director, Naoki Hamaguchi, in an interview with GameSpot, revealed the thought process behind deciding to stick with Unreal Engine 4 as opposed to the more modern 5th version.
It might seem logical (to my ignorant brain) that upgrading to the shiniest new version of your gaming engine would be the obvious choice, but Hamaguchi said that the decision to stick with UE4 came down to the team’s experience with the not-yet obsolete engine. “We’ve been using Unreal Engine 4, but we’ve made a lot of modifications to fit our needs,” says Hamaguchi. “It’s more beneficial to have something we’re already familiar with and have customized to fit our needs.” Hamaguchi previously mentioned that they were considering the switch to UE5 for the highly anticipated threequel, but it would seem the cons outweighed the pros as far as development time and ease (credit: Gamesradar).

Hamaguchi also hit upon the often discussed topic of the upcoming game’s subtitle. The first part of the trilogy was called Remake, followed by Rebirth, and now the finale has it’s own subtitle, but Square isn’t telling! Not yet anyway, so hurry and place your bets (gamble responsibly) on which RE-word you hope to get the subtitle treatment for part 3! According to Hamaguchi, the final say in subtitle choice came down to Creative Director, Tetsuya Nomura after it was narrowed down to two possible candidates. “It was up to Mr. Nomura to decide which it is. And yes, after returning from Paris Games Week, he did choose one, so I can say the title has been locked.”
Square Enix is hoping for another wave of positive news after the recent release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade on Xbox Series and Switch 2, being particularly praised by tech experts, Digital Foundry for its performance on the new gen Nintendo handheld. I’m personally excited to ‘RE’-unite with the Final Fantasy 7 party when the secretly named third part eventually releases!
