The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct Details

Nintendo didn’t waste time or pull any punches with their information for today’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct. In fact, even Miyamoto was quick to say let’s not waste any time. They dove right into a new trailer for the film. “Let’s press the start button right away” was probably the only quip delivered before showing us what we’d all been waiting for.

We see Mario and Luigi, on bikes, ready to do what plumbers do, check out a troubled pipe. Just an ordinary day for these two right? Well not exactly. We quickly see the brothers transform using the fire flower ready to take on whatever comes next. Of course, in typical Luigi fashion, he’s a bit terrified of the dark passageways for a bit of humor. Quickly we see the brothers find the blocked pipe and there are eyes staring back at them. The creature jumps out from the pipe to hide and suddenly we hear a meek noise. Fans of the series will quickly recognize the eyes hidden in the shadows.

Those eyes can only belong to Yoshi.

That’s right, for those who were worries that Yoshi wouldn’t make an appearance, his time is now. Miyamoto reminds us of Yoshi’s history in the overall game series such as Yoshi protecting baby Mario. Yoshi has built up quite a legacy over the last 30 years. Yoshi may not have been in every Mario game but since his introduction, he’s been a fan favorite.

Toad seems to question why this dinosaur gets to join the crew so easily. Completely understandable since it doesn’t seem like every new character introduced is on our heroes side. In the trailer we see Birdo seemingly actively attacking Princess Peach. What could be going on between these two in such a nicely lit and colored scene?

Birdo makes an appearance! Although why is she throwing eggs at Peach?

For those concerned about whether or not the movie would still be ready for an April release, the good news is that yes, it’s on track for an April 1st release. Miyamoto sends the direct over to Chris Meledandri from Illumination to give an update on the work being done on the film. The great news, animation is fully complete and the movie is officially in post production. We’ve learned that the focus is sound design and music and if the previous movie was any indication, the music will be fantastic once again. In fact, they’ve brought in a 70 piece orchestra for music and brought in music from the Super Mario Galaxy Games.

Will this movie be just as good as the first one? With more familiar characters coming in the movie and the film being right on track, this writer is quite hopeful. Especially with that Birdo appearance that I was hoping for. If you’re just interested in the trailer, be sure to check it out below.

If you want to watch the full direct to hear it from Miyamoto and Meledandri from Illumination, check out the direct below. Short, sweet, and to the point, you won’t be disappointed.
