It’s been announced that Ryan Hurst has been tapped to play Kratos in the live-action adaptation of the much loved Santa Monica Studio series. This isn’t his first role in the God of War universe. In fact, Hurst has already taken on the role of Thor in 2022’s God of War Ragnarok. Hurst earned him a BAFTA nomination for the role as well. For those unfamiliar with his video game work, Hurst’s notable live-action roles include Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead.

The show will be based on the Norse arc of the game series. The focus will be on the Greek God’s father-son dynamic upon the death of Kratos’s wife, Faye. Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander) is the showrunner for the much anticipated (especially by me) series. God of War already has two seasons ordered by Prime Video. Frederick E.O. Toye (Shogun, Fallout, The Boys) is set to direct the first two episodes. Fans of the game series will also be happy to know that Cory Barlog, a key figure in the history of the franchise and Director of the 2018 God of War game the series will initially be based on, will act as executive producer.

An official Santa Monica Studio social media account congratulated Hurst on his casting. They went on to say of the actor, “We’re excited to see his take on Kratos as he joins the legendary ranks of T.C. Carson and Christopher Judge who have each shaped this character in unforgettable ways.”
What do you think of Ryan Hurst playing Kratos in the upcoming God of War series? Do you think it’s a good choice, or did you have someone else in mind? What do you think about the choice to go straight to adapting the series from the Norse arc? Would you have preferred they started with Kratos’s Greek origins? Let us know what you think in the comments down below.
