Ecco The Dolphin Returns

SEGA started a retro revival back in 2020 that so far has gone well with games like Streets of Rage 4 and Shinobi: Art Of Vengeance receiving very positive reviews.

While we await the release of games like Golden Axe and Jet Set Radio, it seems one more classic, and to some gamers an infamous franchise will be returning, Ecco The Dolphin.

While no gameplay has been released yet, a press release on the official site reads:

THE WORLD NEEDS ECCO THE DOLPHIN

A&R Atelier announced today that Ecco the Dolphin is officially in development. Originally released in 1992, Ecco the Dolphin garnered critical and commercial acclaim at launch.

“It has been years in the making and we’re honored to bring Ecco back,” said Ed Annunziata, Chief Creative Officer of A&R Atelier. “Ecco has always been more than a game about a dolphin—he’s a bridge between worlds.”

While specific details are still under wraps, A&R Atelier is pleased to share that, in fact, several new Ecco the Dolphin products and games are currently in development. Information regarding these upcoming projects and partnerships will be announced at EccoTheDolphin.com as developments unfold.

Additionally, A&R Atelier has launched the official Ecco the Dolphin Discord server, where fans and newcomers can connect with developers and join the community hub for all things Ecco. The community will receive exclusive updates, behind-the-scenes content, and early looks at what’s to come.

Ecco The Dolphin games were all very positively received for their beautiful graphics, rivaling games like Donkey Kong Country from that era, as well as a sense of adventure and immersion that was quite unique for its time along with an excellent soundtrack. Many gamers however will also remember it for another reason, it was perhaps the most difficult game in the Genesis line up, a tradition that kept up with its sequels as well.

Ecco hasn’t seen a release since the Dreamcast title, Defender of the Future. While the game was great and had a sequel on the way, the failure of the Dreamcast halted things and like many of Sega’s IPs, it was shelved. That is until now at least.

SEGA’s retro revival has gone well so far. Streets of Rage 4 heavily exceeded expectations and Shinobi was among the best games of 2025. It looks like SEGA will be going all in on Ecco’s return as it looks like there will be more than one project going on.

A new Ecco game may still be a ways off but I welcome the return of one of gaming’s forgotten greats. PTSD inducing difficulty and all.

A lifelong gamer who enjoys playing on every platform. Eventually, I grew to love fighting games in particular and began to compete and even win competitions for some games, primarily the 2013 revival of killer instinct. Outside of gaming I also have aspirations of being a comic book artist with a few ideas of my own im developing in my head. When reviewing any game I try to keep my mind open and avoid nitpicking too much. It takes a lot for something to detract me from truly enjoying it so I may not focus on smaller details the way some others might do. I enjoy almost any genre, just don't ask me to play horror games or puzzle games.
