As one door closes, another door opens or so goes the old cliche. However, this is proving to be true when it comes to the music rhythm games of yesteryear and tomorrow. Over the last few weeks GSC has been keeping you updated on the songs that are disappearing from Rock Band 4 forever. The game itself has already been de-listed due to licenses expiring. For those who already own the game, these are the last chances to purchase songs over the next 10 years.
The good news is that the days of rhythm gaming aren’t totally over. Rising from the proverbial ashes is Sound System. Behind Sound System is the developers over at Echo Foundry Interactive, led by two veterans of the Guitar Hero series. While Sound System doesn’t have drum support, it does call back to the good old days with guitar, bass, and vocal support.
Sound System is also taking things one step further for rhythm gamers. The YouTube description also states there will be “innovative creator tools to upload their own music and create original note charts.” Like many games before it, Sound System will have local play for co-op and competitive as well as a no fail mode for those just getting back into the groove of things. Sound System also promises customization with backgrounds and themes so that each player can make it truly their own. This is great for those tired of seeing their avatars at the same performance venue in the background of their favorite rhythm game.
Following models of older music rhythm games, Sound System does also promise regular updates. Hopefully this means we’ll see some old favorites and new loves. Especially if you’ve already missed purchasing your favorite.

Drakong is also introducing new guitars for rhythm games in case your old ones aren’t in the best shape. It seems to be perfect timing with this new announcement from Echo Foundry Interactive. These guitars seem ready to connect to a variety of consoles for your rhythm gaming needs. Or perhaps a challenge in other games using a guitar if that’s your jam. With this pairing of announcements, it feels rhythm games may be in for a renaissance of sorts.
Sound System is due out for Steam in Summer 2026. Release dates for Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation will be announced at a later date. Does this announcement soften the blow of all the previous games being no longer available? Will you be adding this to your wishlist? Let us know in the comments down below.
