For once, we have a piece of Final Fantasy IX news that isn’t tied directly to the beloved JRPG’s 25th anniversary, as it appears the FFIX anime is back in production with a new studio and a 2028 release date!
Originally reported on by news outlet RPGSite, this news was featured in the new issue of Ecran Total, a French publication that covers the business side of film and TV. Apparently, the report states that, after the closure of Cyber Group Studios, which was originally working on the Final Fantasy IX anime, the project will now be handled by Euro Visual. The relevant snippet from the article is presented below, accompanied by an English translation.

“Mel, Kolm, Luciola, Théa, Fala, and Doc, children of the hero Vivi, are the last black mages of the four continents. Today, they live happily in the city of Alexandria, guarded by its rather friendly, though sometimes very curious, inhabitants. Unfortunately, this peaceful existence was not to last… One day, Koln discovers Mel, frozen like a statue, in the inn where he works. Could this be the tragic legacy of their father catching up with them?”
The series, which will run for 13 episodes at 22 minutes each and is listed as a 2D animated show aimed at children aged between 6 and 13 years of age, follows the children of Vivi Ornitier, Final Fantasy’s most iconic Black Mage, and part of FFIX’s main party, but there is no indication if the series will feature any of the game’s cast. Details of the series’ plot, now uploaded online by Cyber Studios Group employees after the studio closure, were apparently leaked back in 2022, and it appears that the new showrunners intend to use those same ideas.
If all goes well, fans can look forward to watching the Final Fantasy IX anime in 2028. Until then, Square Enix no doubt still has a few surprises in store for FFIX’s 25th anniversary, having celebrated since March of this year, without any sign of stopping. Be sure to check back here at the GSC for more FFIX news in the future!
Final Fantasy IX is now available on PS4 (and backward compatible on PS5), Xbox One (and backward compatible on Xbox Series X|S), Nintendo Switch (and backward compatible on Nintendo Switch 2), iOS, Android, Steam, and the Xbox Store for PC.
