Final Fantasy Game Director Pledges Full FF7 Trilogy Will Come to Xbox

For such a long time, Xbox went without big Japanese games. During the Xbox 360 era, Microsoft made a concerted effort to tap into one of gaming’s biggest markets with exclusive JRPG titles like Blue Dragon and the still popular, Lost Odyssey. Unfortunately, the attack on the Japanese market never paid off and during the Xbox One era, Xbox turned their attentions to core Western audiences and let their Japan focus slide.

Sadly, that also meant the platform turned attention away from getting Japanese games on their hardware. Over the last several years, Xbox – and Phil Spencer in particular – have made lots of moves to bring Japanese games back to Microsoft’s ecosystem to good success. Studios and publishers like Capcom, Konami – including Silent Hill 2 Remake – and others have begun to port their games to Xbox and it’s been great to see.

But the feather in the cap has been Square Enix. Following years of PlayStation exclusivity, modern Final Fantasy titles have started to come to Xbox. Over the last year and change, both Final Fantasy 14 and Final Fantasy 16 have made the jump to Xbox.

Early in 2026, the first part of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy will be coming to Xbox Series X/S (and Switch 2). A demo was released for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Integrade just yesterday for both platforms. Now, Final Fantasy Director Naoki Hamaguchi has confirmed that the full trilogy will be coming to Xbox in a post on X (Twitter):

It’s perhaps unsurprising given the first instalment comes to Xbox in January. But it’s excellent to know the full trilogy will follow. The excellent second part, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth which we raved about in our review, doesn’t yet have a release window for Xbox.

The final title in the trilogy is yet to be named, but with players very curious how the remake trilogy will end following Rebirth’s story, there’s many eyes on Square. The first two parts of the trilogy have launched exclusively for PlayStation, followed by PC launches and now Xbox Series X/S and Switch 2. Whether the final part will be a PlayStation launch exclusive is still unknown.
