Hollow Knight: Silksong Passes 7 Million Sales, Free Expansion ‘Sea Of Sorrow’ Announced

Hollow Knight: Silksong, one of this year’s nominees for Game of the Year at The Game Awards, has dashed past a massive sales milestone, with the announcements of a free expansion titled ‘Sea of Sorrow’ and a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the prequel, Hollow Knight.

Team Cherry, the Australia-based Indie team behind the Hollow Knight series, posted the news on their official website, thanking the fans “who’ve braved Silksong’s distant and dangerous lands.” The game has sold more than 7 million copies since it was released on September 4th, not including those who have played the game via Xbox Game Pass.

“It’s a truly staggering number of players, more than we could have ever expected (enough to crash all of the storefronts!). Watching the community grow, seeing the amazing art, the mods, the unexpected strategies, and the support between players through the game’s challenges has been hugely rewarding for us here at home. Your continued enthusiasm remains a massive motivator as we work towards expanding the game even further.”

A teaser trailer for the nautically-themed Sea of Sorrow DLC expansion, which will be free when released, accompanied the news, giving fans of the Souls-like Metroidvania a glimpse of what to expect. You can watch the trailer below.

“New areas, bosses, tools, and more! Hornet’s adventures continue in our nautically themed expansion, coming free for all players next year. We’ll keep further details a secret for now, but expect additional info shortly before Hollow Knight: Silksong – Sea of Sorrow releases.”

Those fans who have yet to pick up Silksong, or just want an excuse to go back and play Hollow Knight again, can also look forward to all versions of the original game getting updated for current platforms, adding features and fixing bugs.

The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Hollow Knight: Silksong is planned to be released in 2026, with players who already own a Nintendo Switch version getting a free upgrade. The Switch 2 version will bring high frame-rate modes, higher resolutions, and many additional graphical effects to the game.

The final piece of news comes in the form of a new series of mini-figures made in partnership with Fangamer and Studio Tyto, depicting Hornet and some of the friends and foes she encounters on her journey.

The mini-figures are available for pre-order right now, and you can find them by following one of the links below:

Now that the long wait for the release of Hollow Knight Silksong is behind us (thank goodness), fans can now look forward to more content coming in the future, as well as other ways to celebrate this Indie darling. Let’s just hope the Sea of Sorrow DLC expansion doesn’t take as long to come out!
