John Romero’s once cancelled shooter has “survived” following several turbulent months with its former publisher pulling funding. The unannounced game lost its funding from Microsoft in July, with staff losing their positions at the Ireland-based studio. At that time it was assumed the game’s development would cease, though Romero Games quickly announced they were looking for new funding to continue the project.
Now, it appears that funding has been secured to save the project and 100+ staff working at the studio. In a video game panel in Madrid (see below), Romero said that the game has survived though it is being “completely redesigned”, has “nothing” to do with the previous project, though it “incorporates a lot of the elements”.
Though a shooter, Romero has commented that Elden Ring is an inspiration for it’s new form. He stated that he has “never played a game like it… But, the things that you do in it, will be new to people, the way that going through Elden Ring was a really new experience,”
Romero went on to add on Elden Ring: “It was a very crazy place, and a different world, and it was really cool to explore it and be like ‘what is that?’… That’s the idea behind what we are doing in this game.” Though the game will now be “very much smaller” to the previous shooter project.
John Romero and his studio are yet to disclose specifics on the game, or where the new funding to keep 110+ people employed has come from, but we should hope to hear more soon. The Father of Doom has rarely disappointed so we will be monitoring Romero Games’ project closely at Gamer Social Club.
