During today’s Wholesome Snack: The Game Awards Edition 2025, indie developers Tiny Roar have revealed their new project, Verdant. Could this be a cosy Last of Us in the making, perhaps?
A post-apocalyptic adventure across the 80s inspired green world of Verdant, sees protagonist Sprout, a young adult who is trying to understand their place in the world. Sprout has a “mystical and unique mutation that gives him the power to take and give life essence, shaping the world around him with every choice”.
The game takes place sometime after the 80s, with technology and culture from the era remaining. Though, nature has started to take back the planet and there will be many lush green spaces.
There are survival elements to the game too, though not dictated to you by an immersion-blocking HUD. Hunger may attract wildlife, your vision can blur when you’re exhausted and senses will warp in high-stress scenarios. The developers are keen to ensure that the survival elements will not interfere with the game itself. The game’s focus isn’t on combat which should be a last resort, with players urged to gather resources and plan ahead instead.
The developers invite fans interested in the game from the reveal today to join their Discord server to get involved with the community before they share more on Verdant in due course. A release window is not yet provided but you can wishlist on Steam now.
