To say its a big week in gaming would be an understatement. With multiple showcases this week ahead of The Game Awards it’s sure to be packed with news. While many wonder what games will win awards, most tune into the show to see whats coming next in the world of gaming. Today, The Game Awards Founder and host Geoff Keighley let us in on what one of the big announcements will be, the next Tomb Raider.
In a post on his personal X page, Keighley made mention that the iconic Lara Croft will be returning and that we will see the “future of one of gaming’s most iconic franchises Tomb Raider.” This of course has fans very excited as it has been quite some time since we’ve seen Lara in a video game, or well at least a new adventure.

As mentioned its been quite awhile since we’ve been on a new adventure with Lara in the Tomb Raider franchise. 2018’s Shadow Of the Tomb Raider was the end of a trilogy created by Crystal Dynamics. It is fully expected that Crystal Dynamics will be back at the helm here despite their recent layoffs. The studio had been helping Xbox Studio The Initiative reboot Perfect Dark before it was cancelled earlier this year as well.
The Next Trilogy?
Whether this next version of Tomb Raider is a continuation of Crystal Dynamics previous trilogy or another reboot we will have to wait and see on Thursday. What we do know is that the game will have a new publisher after Amazon bought the rights to the franchise. Square Enix had previously published the last 3 Tomb Raider titles.
Crystal Dynamics quickly became a powerhouse in the video game development world over a decade ago thanks to their reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise back in 2013. The game was praised by gamers and critics alike and went on to sell over 14 million units. While the sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider, didn’t fare quite as well in the sales department, it was universally praised as one of the best games of last generation.

All told the Crystal Dynamics Tomb Raider “Surivor” trilogy has gone on to amass more than 38 million units as of 2022, likely going above and beyond that since. As a whole, the franchise is one of a handful in gaming history to surpass 100 million in lifetime sales, proving that Lara Croft is indeed a gaming icon.
As a massive fan of the Tomb Raider trilogy I personally cannot wait to see what gets revealed on Thursday at The Game Awards. Just a few more days now!
