Sable Developer Forms New Studio, Eteo, With Funding From Outersloth

Gregorios Kythreotis, co-founder of Shedworks and developer of 2021’s Best Debut Indie Game at The Game Awards, Sable, has announced that they have founded a new studio with their debut game slated to release in 2027.

Gregorios took to social media to make the announcement, as well as releasing an announcement video that you can watch below.

“Sable was our first really big game,” says Gregorios, “it changed my life completely. Eteo is sort of the next step with that. Taking everything I’ve learned from studying architecture, from Shedworks, from Sable, and applying that to new creative explorations, projects that are really personal, but carry on with that lineage of world building, of storytelling, and games that really engage people on an emotional level.”

Shedworks was co-founded by Gregorios and Daniel Fineberg in 2014, a week after the former graduated from studying architecture. The studio’s first game, Sable, which Gregorios was Creative Director of, is an atmospheric third-person open-world game with a focus on exploration. Players guide the eponymous main character on a rite of passage called the Gliding, which will take them across a vast, desert world filled with stunning landscapes dotted with intriguing landmarks and locales.

According to gaming news outlet GamesIndustry.biz, Gregorios Kythreotis confirmed that he and Shedworks co-founder Daniel Fineberg “have gone [their] separate ways.”

Later in the video, Gregorios explains that Eteo has already secured funding from Outersloth, the Indie fund set up by Innersloth, developers of Among Us, and why he felt they were such a good fit.

“One of the big things that we aligned on, I think, was our approach to sustainable development and making things that are going to allow us to make games for a very long time. Rather than thinking in the short term about trying to make loads of money off of one big hit project.”

While the team is not ready to show the game they are currently working on, with a release date slated for 2027, they have launched Eteo Archetypes, a free website and newsletter focused on publishing “in-depth articles on video game design.”
