Things have been looking up lately for fans of stylish character-action games, with the release of Ninja Gaiden 4 and the reveal of multiple upcoming games looking to keep the genre alive. One of the most promising titles announced has been Tides of Annihilation, a fantasy action game from Chinese developer Eclipse Glow Games which debuted a new gameplay trailer at today’s Xbox Partner Preview.
Tides of Annihilation is set in a fantasy world inspired by Arthurian legend, where its protagonist Gwendolyn (voiced by Baldur’s Gate III and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s, Jennifer English) gains the ability to control the Knights of the Round Tables, each of which give her control over special powers. Not much is known of the narrative itself, but the game has a strong visual presentation blending dark fantasy elements with locations based on modern-day London.
The Latest Look at Tides of Annihilation’s Combat
The latest gameplay trailer showcases a fight between Gwendolyn and Tryronoe, The Ferryman. According to the game’s producer, the trailer emphasizes the “Dual Frontline” battle system, which allows players to control Gwendolyn along with the knights, in this case Sir Lamorak.
The combat and the scale of combat encounters bare a striking resemblance to Final Fantasy XVI, with the spectacle only continuing to mount until the end of the boss. Producer Ken Fu claims in an Xbox Wire post that this boss fight in particular was inspired by films such as Doctor Strange, The Matrix, and Inception.
Unfortunately, no release date was given for Tides of Annihilation, implying that the game is still far out from launching. Given that the performance in this trailer is somewhat rough at times, it’s fair to assume that this is somewhat early footage. The game has been confirmed for Xbox’s Play Anywhere initiative, as all of the games featured in the showcase were.
Tides of Annihilation is now in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
