Final Fantasy VII Remake Director Reveals Nintendo Switch 2 Port Performance Details

After almost six years, Final Fantasy VII Remake is gearing up for its multi-platform release in January 2026. This will mark the end of its run as a PlayStation console exclusive. While the Xbox Series X/S version is somewhat of a known quantity, given the hardware’s similarities to the PlayStation 5, many are curious as to how the game will run on Nintendo Switch 2. In a recent interview with Famitsu, co-director Naoki Hamaguchi detailed the resolution and frame-rate targets of the upcoming port.

As a PlayStation 4 title, folks are curious how Final Fantasy VII Remake will run on Nintendo’s newest hardware. The game is known to impress on handheld PCs, such as Steam Deck and ROG Ally. However, neither have received the attention as the game’s Nintendo debut.

More Specifics on Performance Details

In an interview with Famitsu (translated by Genki_JPN), director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed that Final Fantasy VII Remake‘s Switch 2 version will run similarly to its PlayStation 4 predecessor. When docked, the game will run at 1080p resolution with a 30 frames-per-second target. The handheld mode will run with the same frame-rate at a lower internal resolution, using Nvidia’s DLSS technology to upscale to a higher output. The scale of this output was not confirmed.

Some have expressed disappointment that these targets bring the game closer to the PS4 (or PS4 Pro) version of the game. However, it is worth noting that the port is based on the Intergrade release. This version was crafted for newer hardware with higher quality assets than the PS4 version. These include higher resolution textures such as the one on Cloud’s apartment door. This was a known technical issue that was the subject of many memes upon the PS4 game’s release.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is available now on PC, PS4, and PS5. The Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X/S versions will release on January 22, 2026.
