A Remake… Kind Of
The first thing players should know about Octopath Traveler 0 is that it is a complete overhaul of the mobile, free live service title Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent that released in 2020. While 0 takes a lot from that game, it isn’t a complete one for one remake of Champions of the Continent. Square Enix has said that while the story is from the mobile game, 0 will see about 30-40% additional content as far as the story is concerned.

Game play will also similar to Champions of the Continent but will be much more fleshed out and more involved. While CotC had basic town building, it will be a much bigger part of 0 (more on this later).
Story
As mentioned above the story in Octopath Traveler 0 is going to be about 30-40% new compared to Champions of the Continent. The main story is said to be 100 hours long to complete and much longer if you go down the paths of the games side quests. Considering the first two main games were around 50-60 hours each, this represents a massive amount of new content for console players. Octopath Traveler 0 is a prequel to Octopath Traveler.
One major change from Champions of the Continent is that 0 will have players control a customized lead character. The players character is from the town of Wishvale which was destroyed by a fire. The story will be about the players “journey of restoration” which is split into two parts, rebuilding the town and getting revenge on those who burned the town down.
Gameplay
Octopath Traveler 0 will feature a turn based combat system similar to the previous titles in the series. Players will be able to form parties of 8, with 30 companions that can be recruited. There will be a 2 tier system to the combat. Party members on the front-line will be for attacking while party members in the back-line will be recovering HP and SP.

We will also have new abilities and attacks, though the combat and gauges will feel similar to Octopath Traveler 2 as well as featuring the break and boost system the series is known for.
Town Building
While Town building was prevalent in Champions of the Continent, it is being heavily featured in Octopath Traveler 0. While you can get through the game by doing minimal building in the town, the game really opens up if you take the time to rebuild Wishvale into something great.
As you recruit more characters to join you in your quest, they will move into the town and bring with them new skills and upgrades. Things like learning to cook with new recipes, using the museum to display treasures and much more. You can even move around the residents for which house they live in. All of this is designed to make Wishvale a very lively place the more you put into it.

Cooking Heavily Featured
While Octopath Traveler 1 & 2 had cooking in them in certain side quests, it wasn’t an actual gameplay mechanic you engaged in. You were just tracking down recipes and ingredients to hand off to NPC. In Octopath Traveler 0 cooking becomes a much more important mechanic.
Similar to other games in the genre, collecting cooking ingredients and taking them to your camp to cook with the recipes you learn along the way will bring buffs to your party. You will get ingredients from farms and rewards from battles.
