Following the news earlier this year that Rare’s Everwild cancellation, we are still getting glimpses of what might have been. The cancellation of Everwild came amidst the deluge you of cancellations and layoffs within the umbrella of Xbox Games.
Everwild, which was slated to be the next major title launch from Rare, was initially announced in 2019. Despite two different trailers of what the game might have been, players were always left wondering. What would Everwild actually be like, in terms of gameplay? With credit to mp1st, we now have a some more insight of what might have been.

In these images from the early stages of Everwild, we can get a sense of what gameplay might have been. These captures, which mainly focus around the UI of the game, display such Inventory areas as Figments, Tools, and Mosaics, to name a few. Additionally, it seems that players would have had the ability to “favorite” certain items for quick access. We are also given one, while incredibly blurry, view of the world itself.

Refocus of Rare
Everwild had reportedly been in development for nearly a decade at the time of its cancellation. Additionally, the project was slated to have Gregg Mayles (Banjo-Kazooie, Viva Pinata) at the helm as Creative Director. Following the cancellation of Everwild, Mayles left Rare, despite having been a pillar at Rare for nearly 35 years of game development. Microsoft noted, in the wake of the massive layoffs, that Rare was going to be more focused around the closure of the Fable reboot, as well as continuing their on-going support of Sea of Thieves.
While it may not be much, gaming fans that were looking forward to Everwild are at least able to get this small view of what the project might have been, had the game come to fruition.
