Heartbreak for Sonic Adventure Fans as Remake Not in Production

The 1998 SEGA Dreamcast launch game is one of my personal top-10 games of all time, the opportunity to play as numerous characters across an overlapping story felt truly next-gen at the time.

Fans of Adventure have long been questioning SEGA on the possibility of a remake of the game. Unsurprisingly so in an era of remakes and remasters releasing on an almost weekly basis, SEGA themselves are working on remakes of fan favourites including Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio.

In an interview about the newly released Sonic Racing: Crossworlds – which we had a lot of praise for in our review – BBC asked Sonic Team head, Takashi Iizuka about the possibility of an Adventure remake.

He commented that modern technology enables Sonic Team to develop “richer, more complex, more interesting worlds”.

“Instead of using all that time and energy to remake a game that people have already experienced, we could make a brand-new game instead… I think the team is really interested in taking that same amount of time and energy and effort to really bring a new experience to the players.” (Credit: BBC Newsbeat)

Whilst we don’t know what 3D Sonic project is in the works at the moment, it’s very likely we will see something in the next year or two. The Sonic movies continue to big successes at the box office, with Sonic 4 launching into cinemas 19 March 2027. A new mainline 3D entry may look to ride the launch hype of the next film.

Fortunately, Sonic Adventure and it’s DX upgrade – which originally launched on the GameCube version of the classic – remains on sale via Xbox and Steam. While some of the platforming may feel dated now, it does still hold up relatively well visually and mechanically. It was a clear inspiration for Sonic’s most recent 3D adventure, Frontiers which launched in 2022.
