Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake was one of the biggest surprises from this month’s Nintendo Direct, introducing a fully rebuilt take on the series’ most beloved entry. Now, as part of Xbox’s Tokyo Game Show 2025 showcase – see the full list of reveals here – Team Ninja has given a better look at the remake of the 2003 cult classic.
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is a full reimagining of the original PlayStation 2 survival horror game that followed a young girl named Mio, as she attempts to escape a haunted village with her sister Mayu, weilding the series’s iconic Camera Obscura to fend off evil spirits inspired by Japanese folklore.
The original game utilized a fixed-camera perspective, but as we can see from the new gameplay, the remake will take the third-person, over the shoulder perspective from the Nintendo Wii port that was later adopted for future Fatal Frame titles. The remake will also introduce a new mechanic allowing Mio to hold Mayu’s hand while escaping the spirits, something the developers claim they had intended to implement into the original game but were unable to due to hardware limitations.
Series creator Makoto Shibata also reveals in the new trailer that Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake will be developed by Team Ninja, the studio best known for the Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive, and Nioh series. Given that this team is already hard at work on Nioh 3 and co-developing Ninja Gaiden 4, it’s impressive to see the studio prepare such an impressive line-up all releasing in the span of a year.
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake will release for PC, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S in early 2026.
