The September 12, 2025 Nintendo Direct opened up in a big way. While celebrating the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros, they shared some new details on the upcoming movie sequel.
That’s right, the new movie takes us to the Mario Galaxy! The trailer opens as vividly and beautiful as you can expect with Mario taking a well deserved rest. We follow a lone butterfly as it explores the Mushroom Kingdom to eventually make it into outer space to reveal the title. Then we see an all too familiar star appear to say the iconic “let’s a go”.
What the trailer does not reveal in the video is the release date. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is due out April 2026. Chris Pratt, Jack Black, Anya Taylor Joy, Charlie Day, and more return to reprise their roles from the first movie. No surprise here but it’s great to hear they will return. The real question becomes, who else will we be seeing in the film?
With us exploring the galaxy, does that mean we also may be introduced to Rosalina? If so, who might she be played by? The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has a lot to live up to if it wants to be as good as it’s predecessor. Can they repeat the same magic twice?
If you haven’t dived into the Super Mario Galaxy games, the time is now. Especially as Nintendo revealed Super Mario Galaxy & Galaxy 2 pack coming to Nintendo Switch 2 and the original Switch. This collection launches on October 2nd so be sure to pick it up to prepare for the movie’s release.
There was so much more announced at the Nintendo Direct so be sure to check back for all updates and the full recap here.
