In case you missed it, at Gamescom in Germany, the upcoming anime adaptation of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice premiered it’s first trailer. The anime will be Sekiro: No Defeat and will bring the story from the game to a larger audience. The series will stream exclusively on Crunchyroll in most countries and you can watch the trailer down below. Viewers in Japan, China, Korea, Russia and Belarus will have to find alternate viewing channels.
If the voices sound familiar, that’s because voice actors from the game will reprise their roles. Daisuke Namikawa as Wolf, Miyuki Satou as Kuro and Kenjiro Tsuda as Genichiro Ashina will return to the roles. The Director of this upcoming series is Kenichi Kutsuna. Kutsuna has worked on other action series such as Naruto, One Punch Man, and Bleach so perhaps the series is in good hands.
The visuals work for the story that viewers can expect. Slightly gritty, not as clean and perfect, and in some ways, even nostalgic for older anime. Some may feel that it is reminiscent of the days prior to AI, as it should. Over the weekend at both Anime NYC and online, it was confirmed that there was no AI usage. Sekiro: No Defeat is fully hand-drawn. At a time when AI finds it’s way more and more into video game development and animation, it’s refreshing to hear this will go back to basics.

The presenters at the Anime NYC Crunchyroll panel shared some moments they are curious about for the adaptation. One moment that came up was the two phase guardian ape fight but no confirmation if this will appear. The presenters during the panel were also happy to see the response of the chat during the premiere of the trailer. With a happy team, perhaps we’ll get the series sooner rather than later.
Sekiro is not the only FromSoftware property to get additional media treatment. Elden Ring is in the works for a movie adaptation from studio A24 with writer-director Alex Garland attached to the project. Will you be watching Sekiro: No Defeat when it airs? Let us know down below.
