The one more thing at Gamescom Opening Night Live, came from Game Science as they announced Black Myth: Zhong Kui, the next entry in its myth-inspired action RPG series. Following the breakout success of Black Myth: Wukong, which sold over 10 million copies in its first three days, the studio is shifting focus to a new protagonist drawn from Chinese folklore – a ghost-catching god who walks between the realms of the living and the dead.
Unlike Wukong's journey westward, Zhong Kui promises a darker, more introspective tale. The teaser trailer showed mythical beings walking through misty streets, with Zhong Kui himself riding a giant tiger. The game leans heavily into supernatural horror, with themes of redemption, regret, and spiritual unrest woven into the narrative.
Game Science confirmed that Zhong Kui will remain a single-player action RPG, launching on PC and all mainstream console platforms. While there's no release date yet, the developers emphasised that the project is still in early development – described as "barely more than an empty folder" at this stage.
The decision to pivot away from a direct Wukong sequel stems from the studio's desire to explore new gameplay ideas and challenge its own creative boundaries. "Zhong Kui came as a natural choice born of that aspiration," reads the official statement, hinting at new features and a fresh approach to world-building.
