PlayStation’s first quarter 2025 fiscal year results are in, and it reads all black as the PlayStation 5 hits a major milestone of 80 million units shipped.
As of the quarter ending June 30th, the PlayStation 5 has now shipped 80.3 million units, a 2.5 million increase from the previous quarter. This is a slight uptick from the 2.4 million they sold in the same quarter last year, an impressive feat for a console nearly 5 years into its life cycle. While the PlayStation 5 Pro likely played a part in that, theres no denying any growth year over year on hardware is an accomplishment.

Of course the PlayStation business is much more than just hardware, and everything else in the company is also up. Just some of the key highlights include:
- Game & Network Services up 8% year over year
- Software sales (PS5,PS4) up 23% year over year to 65.9 million
- First Party game sales up 15% year over year to 6.9 million
- PSN Network active users up 6% year over year to 123 million
- Operating Income up 127% year over year
All of this is great news for the company, showing that is push towards putting more games on PC isn’t really affecting its console business much while also growing their software sales and bottom line. With Helldivers 2 coming to Xbox later this month, and perhaps more games coming to their competitors soon, will that affect things much? Time will tell.

One interesting thing to touch on is that digital game sales on PlayStation grew to 83%. We have a big focus on physical games here at Gamer Social Club and to see even PlayStation reach such a high number is interesting. This is up 3% from last year as digital continues to grow.
No Updates On Franchise Growth
Another thing of note from PlayStation’s fiscal reports of late is that we havent received any updates on franchise sales since late last year. Many have been waiting to get an update on things like Helldivers 2, Astro Bot and others, but for whatever reason Sony has stopped providing updates on these numbers. I don’t think its a concern or anything, but worth a note at the very least.
Looking ahead PlayStation has a solid lineup for the rest of the year. Death Stranding 2 released in this Q1 update however the bulk of it’s success will come in the following quarter as it released near the end of June. Additionally they have Lost Soul Aside dropping later in August as well as the aforementioned release of Helldivers 2 on Xbox.
This is all followed up by the sequel to Ghost Of Tsushima, Ghost Of Yotei dropping closer to the end of the year in October. With a strong lineup we can likely see PlayStation continue this momentum in terms of growth the rest of the year.
