Just two days after the Pokémon Presents we’ve got even more Pokémon news, this time from Pokémon TGC Pocket. Releasing on Wednesday the 30th of July the new expansion; Wisdom of Sea and Sky focuses on the Generation 2 Pokédex, with legendaries Ho-oh and Lugia being pack mascots.
Pokémon Gold and Silver released in 1999 (I know), and are in the top 5 best selling Pokémon games of all time. They introduced a lot of new mechanics, including Shiny Pokémon, Baby Pokémon and the Steel and Dark types. We’ve already seen a few of the 100 gen 2 Pokémon in TGC Pocket including Espeon and Umbreon in the previous Eevee Grove Expansion – although now they finally have ex variants!
Looking at the trailer we can see that baby Pokémon are making their way to Pocket. Much like in the traditional TGC they look to have very low health, but offset this by being able to attack with no energy – meaning you can use their moves turn one. Budew and it’s Itchy Pollen move has been a staple of the card game for a little while, but it’ll be interesting to see how much of an impact they make in Pocket given the reduced points needed to win.

Both Ho-oh and Lugia look to enable each other, with Lugia being the first card in Pocket to require 3 distinct energy types (excluding colourless) which Ho-oh helpfully generates. And it looks like some of the new Trainer cards are also set up to enable multi energy decks more easily. This is also the first expansion where we see a Shiny Pokémon with a unique moveset in Shiny Gyarados.
I, for one am a big fan of Pokémon TGC Pocket, and will be looking forward to building a completely off meta Typhlosion deck to mess around at the low Ultra Ball tier with in ladder. Have you been playing Pokémon TGC Pocket? Let us know in the comments.
