The Nintendo Switch 2 has seen a really strong start to sales in its homeland of Japan with renowned magazine, Famitsu reporting that Nintendo's new hybrid console has sold at least 1.5m units within the first month.
Based on the data that Famitsu has collated from over 3,000 Japanese stores, the console has sold 1,538,260 units in its first month. This makes the Switch 2 the highest selling console in Japan since Famitsu began collecting data 29 years ago in 1996.
Though the sales have eclipsed 1.5m from various Japanese retailers, it is likely a much higher number as sales of Switch 2 consoles from Nintendo directly do not contribute to their data. The original Nintendo Switch, although incredibly successfully commercially and critically, started much slower in Japan with sales of 556,633 units within the same first month period.
Globally, Switch 2's launch has been a resounding success for Nintendo with over 3.5m consoles sold within its first four days. In its first year on sale the original Switch sold 15m units across the globe, with a strong start to sales for the Switch 2 Nintendo may be confident of eclipsing that figure. Upcoming titles like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokemon Legends Z-A will likely generate more console sales for the holiday period.
