The official ATLUS West Twitter/X account shared today that their new IP Metaphor: ReFantazio has sold 2 million units worldwide. For a new IP to sell this many copies is no small feat. This has been the fastest-selling game ever since its release in October when it sold one million copies on the first day.

Of course, that does mean that for a game that had such great sales on the first day, it’s taken the better part of a year to double sales. Despite the nomination for Game of the Year at the Game Awards and winning Best Narrative and RPG, sales have slowed. It’s possible that Metaphor hasn’t quite hit it’s stride with the larger RPG audience. Of course, not every RPG hits in the same way right away, some slowly become cult classics or fan favorites.
Many are quick to point out that Metaphor received positive reviews but is far behind the sales numbers of Persona 5 Royal. However, these comparisons feel somewhat unfair. Persona 5 Royal is not only the “complete” version of Persona 5, it is also part of a franchise. Currently there is also no word if Metaphor: ReFantazio will release a “complete” edition in the coming years.

Should Metaphor receive an updated release, will this hit as many sales if not more? Metaphor: ReFantazio is most likely one of the best JRPGs of 2024 and doesn’t require the complete version treatment. While no ATLUS game has ever needed a longer game, Persona has been notorious for doing so by comparison. Will this be another point of divergence among these ATLUS games?
If you haven’t already, you can always read last year’s editorial on why it should have won Game of the Year. Or perhaps it’s time for you to pick up a copy and give it a shot. Is it overrated, undersold, or not well enough hyped? Sound off below if you’ve played and let us know your thoughts.
