Rare Announces A Sea Of Thieves Community Direct For July

To say that Xbox has been dealing with some rough seas recently would be an understatement, with the company having thousands of layoffs across many of its departments, resulting in game cancellations, studio closures, and the loss of many experienced industry veterans. One studio that was affected is Rare, which saw its next potential title, Everwild, cancelled after over 10 years of development. The studio sails on, thankfully, as the captains of one of Xbox’s most successful recent IPs, Sea of Thieves. Akin to firing a bright flare above the murky fog, Rare has announced a Sea of Thieves Community Direct, scheduled for July 10th, 2025, at 3 PM BST.

The Community Direct, which was originally announced via the official Sea of Thieves website and later on their social media, will be watchable on the Sea of Thieves YouTube channel. The stream, which premieres tomorrow (at the time of writing), comes with a short description that is sure to get SoT players doing an excited jig:

“Join core crew members for the first ever Sea of Thieves Community Direct, where they’ll talk about upcoming Seasons, big Insider Programme changes and a much-requested feature that’s recently been ticking away in development…”

What much-requested feature could the developers be alluding to? We’re sure that the SoT fanbase has a list of demands as long as a sloop, but Rare is not giving any hint as to what it might be.

That’s not all the Sea of Thieves news for today, as a short video covering the upcoming July update for Season 16, the full rundown of next week’s Legends Unleashed Event, and a quick gander at some colourful goods arriving in the Outpost stores. You can check all that out in the video below.

It will be interesting to know what the future has in store for Sea of Thieves, and by extension, Rare, after what happened with the mass layoffs, especially now that the studio no longer has Everwild to work on. The SoT team have already stated that they have the next 5 years planned for the game, but having made it through the recent storm, perhaps Rare find themselves looking at a less familiar horizon.

Will you be watching the Sea of Thieves Community Update on July 10th? What would you like to see added to the game? Let us know in the comments below.
