There has always been a bit of an overlap with anime and video games and 2025 has been no exception. With Anime Expo 2025 currently happening, it’s not surprising we’d get at least one announcement on an anime based on a video game. On Friday, we learned there would be a new Cyberpunk: Edgerunners season.

Hosted by YouTuber Joey “The Anime Man” Bizinger, the panel was also streamed on to Twitch for viewers. Lucy and David’s voice actors Emi Lo and Zach Aguilar joined the panel along with writer producer Bartosz Sztybor to discuss Cyberpunk: Edgerunners as a whole. Bartosz brought a lot of humor to the panel very quickly. He shared that CD Projekt Red finds it very important to tell human stories and character driven stories. The humor comes when he shared, “I’m from Poland and people in Poland are sad. They are born sad, they die sad, so I just wanted to make the whole world sad.” When asked about writing a happy story he responded, “No, when people are sad I’m a bit happy.” Could this also be giving some insight into what to expect in this upcoming series? We didn’t have to wait too long for that answer. Insight would come once Director Hiroyuki Imaishi and translator/producer Saya Elder joined the panel.
What We Know About Season 2
Bartosz was quick to tell the audience, “don’t get too excited, David’s dead.” Even with his death, there was plenty of cheers for a new season and more time in Night City. There are plenty of characters with lots of stories to tell within the city and this is a step in that direction. Expect a “sadder, bloodier, and more raw” season according to Bartosz. Season 1 was a romanticized version, season 2 will be the truth of being an Edgerunner as per Bartosz.
Kai Ikarashi, director of Season 1, Episode 6 (Girl on Fire) will now be the director of Season 2. He becomes the director of the project taking over from Imaishi who was initially hesitant to expand into another season. At the panel, Imaishi shared Ikarashi would be the right man to move the series forward.
For those who enjoyed the animation of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Studio Trigger returns so expect the same, if not better, level of animation. Studio Trigger always looks to raise their own bar so this is quite exciting news. This will be a “younger, fresher staff” and Imaishi is excited to see the fresh takes they put on the show.

While you wait for Season 2…
With no date for season 2 just yet, now is the time for a rewatch if you need that refresher. Or if you just want to be a bit depressed again. If watching it on Netflix with a bit of buffering ruins the mood, you can take this animation home with you if you purchase the upcoming Blu-ray box set.

This box set will come with a special booklet, final episode storyboard book, 3 animation cell sheets, and a 2 year anniversary poster. Pricing has not yet been revealed for this set but pre-orders will begin August 26th with a release date of October 28th. Of course, when we’re talking about a city as big as Night City, it doesn’t end here.
There is also a manga being released by Dark Horse Comics. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Madness will be coming out next year. “It’s a prequel about Becca and Pilar,” according to Bartosz who wrote the story. Volume 1 will be available anywhere books are sold beginning February 24, 2026.
If it’s more Lucy you need, she’ll be joining Arc System Works popular fighter Guilty Gear -Strive- as a new character.
As Cyberpunk universe continues to grow, will you be tuning into this next season? Perhaps this is the perfect hold over until we receive more information on Cyberpunk 2. Sound off below if you’re going to be impatiently waiting for your re-entry to Night City.
