More bad news for games development this week as Techland, the developers of Dying Light have reportedly cancelled development of two new titles. The studio – which was acquired by Tencent in 2023 – reported large losses in their 2024 financials as per a report in Pulz Bisnesu.
Just last month, at Summer Games Fest, the company showed off more of their newest title in the Dying Light franchise – Dying Light: The Beast due to release in August of this year. Originally starting out as a DLC for the second game, it looks like the main focus of the company is to ensure it launches in it’s best state possible across all platforms. In a statement to EuroGamer a spokesman from Techland said,
“Our primary focus right now is to release Dying Light: The Beast for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. After the launch of Dying Light: The Beast, we will share more about future titles in due time.”
They also confirmed that despite the cancellations there has been no reduction in headcount at the studio, which comes as a big relief after the losses of the previous weeks.
“Game development is never a straight line, and sometimes fresh approaches are necessary to make great games. What’s important here is that none of the reported changes have resulted in staff reductions. Developers were moved to other projects and are working on a number of games in our pipeline.”
There’s no confirmation of what the two cancelled titles were, and what the games the developers have been moved too, but hopefully we’ll find out what’s coming up from the studio in due course.
