If you thought the only news from Rare’s piratical playground was at the Xbox Games Showcase 2025, another message in a bottle has washed up on shore. Sea of Thieves had its monthly news update today, and one announcement in particular is likely to have fans chugging a tankard of grog, or two. Pirate Profiles will be coming to Sea of Thieves this August!
The Sea of Thieves news update covered a number of other topics, including Season 16 and Fight Night updates, which we will cover later on. You can watch the video below or on the official Sea of Thieves YouTube channel.
First things first, Pirate Profiles! As explained in the news update by Senior Designer Steven Dillon, Pirate Profiles give players “the ability to create a whole new pirate on their account without losing the hard-earned progress they’ve made with their original pirate”.
“These will be a premium add-on for Sea of Thieves fans who want to experience the joy and freedom of creating a new pirate from scratch,” continues Steven, “allowing them to set off on an uncharted journey of new goals and roleplaying opportunities.”
Alongside the fact that Pirate Profiles will need to be purchased, and we are not privy to the price at present, there are a few other details that players will want to know before booting up the game and creating a new buccaneer.
- Players must first purchase a Pirate Deed from the Pirate Emporium, the game’s real money store.
- On creating a Pirate Profile, players will get the chance to pick a new pirate from the infinite pirate generator.
- Players can also pick a visual theme for their Pirate Profile, giving each one a more distinct character.
- Any cosmetics bought from the Pirate Emporium or earned through the Plunder Pass will be available across all Pirate Profiles. Cosmetics bought with gold, doubloons, earned through commendations or seasonal events, do not.

We weren’t given a firm date for when Pirate Profiles would arrive in Sea of Thieves, but it’s safe to assume that, since we were given the broad window of August, they will be part of Season 17, Smuggler’s Tide.
The rest of the Sea of Thieves update included an update for the current season; Reaper’s Chests can now be unsealed to unleash some skeletal scoundrels to help you on the high seas. Nothing is lost when handing in the loot, so don’t waste the opportunity to summon some bony brigands!
With the game’s next update on June 19th(mark your calendars for maintenance downtime, mateys), returns Fight Nights, a PvP event that offers increased rewards and a unique unlockable for each of the two PvP factions.

Finally, new cosmetics have been added to the Pirate Emporium, and a new batch of Twitch Drops are available to unlock from June 20th – 27th.
