It's overload season with the amount of game trailer drops that we have had in the past 48 hours. Some are platformers. Others are cozy. Some are tactics-based. And some...some are horror. Whispers in the Fog falls into that camp.
Whispers in the Fog had a teaser trailer dropped today during the Future Games Showcase. And what we saw...left us feeling very unsettled. This first-person psychological horror experience that will have a heavy focus on atmosphere, exploration, and unraveling a mystery. What's the mystery? You've awoken in foggy, rainy forest – with no memories from prior to waking. The only item at your disposal? A mere flashlight. And nothing but haunting whispers surrounding you in these eerie woods.
The Gameplay
From what we have seen in the launch trailer, there doesn't appear to be any kind of way to defend yourself in this overbearingly unsettling environment. You'll have to use your observational skills and memory to move forward. As you progress forward, you'll find more items in the world that will aid in solving puzzles in this open-world forest.
The Environment
According to Pasquale Scionti, the atmosphere and lighting in Whispers in the Fog will provide a dynamic weather state. This dynamic environment will fluctuate depending on where you are in this forest. Light will be scarce and shadows will seem even longer than they should. And what lurks in those shadows? Only your courage will allow you to determine if those whispers are helping...or hindering you.
Additional Features
Oh, did we mention that you'll need to solve puzzles in this oppressive environment? Well...now you know! These puzzles will be even more challenging with spatial audio designing that will blur the line between what's real, and what's only in your mind.
Rest assured though, there is a story in this game. Scattered throughout the forest, you'll find journal entries, personal belongings, and memories that may point to who you are and what kind of journey you are on.
One of the last pieces to note. Whereas many games nowadays rely on jumpscares to fill that horror void, Whispers in the Fog does not. It creates a creeping sense of dread and unease that you'll carry with you throughout the entirety of the game.
