Sony announced today that prices on select models of the PlayStation 5 will be increased, effective immediately. In a post published on the official PlayStation Blog, Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President of Global Marketing for SIE, explained the need for these price hikes.
“With a backdrop of a challenging economic environment, including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates, SIE has made the tough decision to raise the recommended retail price (RRP) of the PlayStation 5 console in select markets in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Australia and New Zealand. “

Here are the new PS5 prices by region:
Europe: PS5 Digital Edition _ €499.99
UK: PS5 Digital Edition _ £429.99Â
Australia: Standard PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive _ AUD $829.95, PS5 Digital Edition _ AUD $749.95
New Zealand: Standard PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive _ NZD $949.95, PS5 Digital Edition _ NZD $859.95
A silver lining to this rather dreary news is that the PS5 Disc Drive will be getting a decrease in price across these regions:
Europe: €79.99
UK: £69.99
Australia: AUD $124.95
New Zealand: NZD $139.95
* Select markets in EMEA not listed above may also receive RRP increases. Please check with your local retailer and direct.playstation.com where available.Â
It seems a far cry from the days when consoles would take price cuts midway through their lifecycle. Along with the inevitable price hike for individual video games, this expensive hobby is getting even pricier! Our recommendation is to enjoy your backlogs and check out some smaller games from the AA and Indie scene.
