ReSetna RUBY ARMOUR UPGRADE Impressions

The RUBY ARMOUR UPGRADE update for the post-apocalyptic sci-fi metroidvania ReSetna has arrived, and it comes with a lot more than just a new red look for the game’s protagonist. It's the most substantial of more than a dozen updates that Today’s Games has released in response to player feedback. Addressing many elements of the game, from combat and UI/UX, to side content and boss fights, the RUBY ARMOUR UPGRADE is the culmination of a full month of hard work and dedication to making ReSetna the best it could be.

Having reviewed ReSetna for GSC, I was eager to see how the developers tackled its issues and to share my impressions for those considering a return"”or a first playthrough.

First and foremost, the combat of ReSetna has been given a full overhaul, with updated animations and effects to provide better hit feedback, as well as balance the viability of each weapon. The starting pair of axes now have a much stronger combo, meaning I didn’t feel the needt to rush and buy one of the other two weapons available.

Combat Feels Amazing Now!

Combat feels more fluid as well, and projectiles don’t force you to flinch, giving every encounter a smoother and more responsive feel. While the game’s combat was something I praised and thought was one of the better parts of ReSetna, it’s still great to see the dev team improve what was already great.

One element I took particular issue with in the base game was the handling of side quests and collectibles. Originally, these felt tacked on and unfinished, with little to no fanfare or feedback. With the RUBY ARMOUR UPGRADE update, the side missions and collectibles have seen a reworking, giving them a better user experience and sense of progression.

Items Have Improved Visual Effects/Appearance.

Objects now have improved visuals and provide more information on pickup, including how many the player has collected. It is also more informative, telling the player what they are collecting and what it is used for, something that was noticably missing in the base game. As for the side missions, they now come with rewards, so they don’t just feel like needless busywork anymore.

ReSetna’s UI has also been spruced up. A mini map has been added into the bottom right hand corner of the screen as a direct response to player’s frustrations with getting lost and having to constantly pause the game to examine the world map.

The Mini Map Is A Great Addition!

The last improvement I’ll detail is the chase sequence that happens close to the end of the game, which has also seen a visual update. Clearly I wasn’t the only player that had issues with this sequence, and I’m thankful that the team addressed it.

There are two other additions that fans have been asking for that are worth highlighting, even if I didn’t make use of them. Players can now rebind keys, and controllers have multiple preset layouts to choose from. The final boss of the game has also been redesigned, but I’m not going to spoil that, and let players discover it for themselves.

Overall, it is clear a great deal of work has gone into these improvements, and ReSetna is better for them. The game feels more refined, and from what I've experienced, The RUBY ARMOUR UPGRADE update elevates ReSetna beyond my original 6.5/10 rating. With this free update automatically installed, ReSetna has reached a new benchmark. While the game may not have had the grace and efficiency of its protagonist at launch, the RUBY ARMOUR UPGRADE brings it much closer to fulfilling its directive"”and this time, I can confidently recommend it!

ReSetna is available now on PC(Steam), Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch.
