That’s not a type-o, and you didn’t misread it. The PlayStation 3, which will be 20 years old next year in 2026, just got a new 4.92 firmware update, which was announced via the official AskPlaystation Twitter/X account. I know, crazy.
While the console was discontinued worldwide by the end of 2017, in November 2024 Sony announced that the PlayStation 3 had sold 87.4 million units.

As far as what’s notable about this update is, it ensures continued Blu-Ray playback support and what’s being called “minor system improvements”. There isn’t any information on what those improvements might actually be.

This isn’t as odd as it might seem. PlayStation has updated the system a few times in the last couple of years for what was called “system performance” issues, which at the time also didn’t really give anything in the way of real detail. Also, in 2022, PlayStation dropped firmware 4.89, which for security reasons required a device password, which upset fans as it added extra steps to generate said password.
An important note: to update to the new 4.92 firmware, you will need at least 200mb of extra space on you’re hard-drive.
