Well, this is what I would call an odd turn of events. Electronic Arts has uploaded the source code to a ton of Command & Conquer games from their back catalog. I was made aware of this by Modern Vintage Gamer, who is known for working as a game developer for Limited Run Games and a podcast he has with known leaker Nate The Hate. More details we’re given on the official C&C account of Twitter/X
Attention Commanders: We’re excited to announce that we released source code for several Command and Conquer titles and enabled Steam Workshop user map support for even more C&C games.

The source code of the games in question include C&C the remaster collection, Renegade, Zero Hour, Tiberian Dawn, and The Red Alert games along with code for mod support for the games. They have also enabled workshop support for the games on Steam, which means mod support will be directly on Steam without having to deal with something like nexus mods.
This sort of move isn’t entirely unheard of in manstream gaming. Id Software famously released the linuxs source code for Doom in 1997, leading to a whole host of Doom clones, mods, and everything in between.

As far as to what this could mean for any other Command & Conquer games in the future is unclear. ID Software has proven this type of move doesn’t mean a game is dead, but there hasn't been any official word from EA about a new game since the free to play game was cancelled back in 2013. I, for one, will be looking forward to whatever mods will be coming to these classic games.
