Death, taxes and PlayStation consoles selling well. Some things are just inevitable in life. Despite some growing issues going on at PlayStation the last few months, the company continued to churn out PlayStation 5 consoles at an impressive rate. So impressive that the PlayStation 5 has now surpassed 75 million units lifetime.
This number comes today via Sony's latest quarterly report which ended December 31st 2024. Q3 2024 also saw the PlayStation 5 set a record for the next fiscal quarter ever for hardware shipping a whopping 9.5 million hardware units in the quarter. Of course PlayStation shipped the new PlayStation 5 Pro console last quarter which surely boosted numbers. Sony did not provide a breakdown of PlayStation 5 vs PlayStation 5 Pro sales.
Overall console and game sales rose 16% year over year and profit grew 37%. Sony says that increase is due to a boost available hardware units, increased sales of third party games as well as increased sales of its network services.
2 Major Titles Still On Track For 2025
As part of today's financial results Sony reiterated that both Death Stranding 2 and Ghost Of Yotei are still planned for a 2025 release. Neither game was present at yesterday's State Of Play so this was good news to reassure fans.

Sony also said they saw a new record amount of users on the PlayStation Network last quarter with 129 million active users. Also 42% of new PlayStation 5 purchases were new users to the PlayStation Network suggesting growth well beyond PlayStation 4 users upgrading.
And of course we have to talk about physical game sales here. 74% of games sold on PlayStation last year were digital, up from 66% the year prior.
