In a recent BioWare studio update,General Manager Gary McKay announced a significant restructuring within the company with BioWare fully focused on the development of the next Mass Effect game. “Given this stage of development, we don't require support from the full studio,” McKay explained. “We have incredible talent here at BioWare, and so we have worked diligently over the past few months to match many of our colleagues with other teams at EA that had open roles that were a strong fit.”
He confirmed that a core team is currently focused on developing the next Mass Effect game, led by veterans of the original trilogy, including Mike Gamble, Preston Watamaniuk, Derek Watts, Parrish Ley, and others.
This announcement signals BioWare’s shift to a single-project focus, with Mass Effect now taking center stage.
Former BioWare veteran Mark Darrah shared his thoughts on the change via his YouTube channel, noting, “In arguably the most slow and painful way possible, BioWare is figuring out that it simply can’t do more than one project at a time now.” He added, “Everyone at BioWare will be working on Mass Effect. But of course, Mass Effect isn’t ready to suddenly have a team of 250 or 300 people working on it.”
Darrah concluded, “This might be great because what it means is that BioWare, for the first time really ever, is able to singularly focus on a single project.”
