Well, it would appear Sony has found its permanent CEO. Announced on January 28th, 2025, on Pr Newswire Hideaki Nishino will permanently take the reigns as CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment effective April 1st of this year.
“Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), the company behind PlayStation, today announced the appointment of Hideaki Nishino to the role of President and CEO effective April 1, 2025” the article reads.
Back in 2024, Jim Ryan, a long-time employee who took the job as CEO of Playstation back in 2019, retired from the company in March of 2024. After this, in May of that year, Nishino was made CEO of Sonys Platform Business Group, and Herman Hulst was made CEO of the divisions Stuido Buisness Group.
As for what this means for Hulst, he will still serve as CEO of the studio side of SIE but now will report directly to Nishino, effectively ending the “co CEO” thing that had been going on since Jim Ryan’s retirement.
This was both interesting and likely expected. A Co-CEO management pyramid was a temporary one. It is perhaps a bit surprising it happened so quickly though.
The last few months has been a bit tumultuous within PlayStation after many live service games have been canceled and the one that did release was quickly shut down. Look for this new leadership to quickly right the ship.
