The painting puzzle was probably one of the harder puzzles in Dead Of Darkness for me to wrap my head around, as the riddle didn’t really make sense to me. So I thought I’d try to help some people out with it! If you’d like to read my thoughts on the game, check out our Dead of Darkness review. Before we get to that, let’s get into what you need and how to get there.
Location
You need to make sure you have the Green Gem key found on the eastern side of the Floor 2(F2) of the Graham Manor. After that, head to the main staircase and go down to Floor 1(F1). Head to the east side of the floor and use the gem key to unlock the room circled in the picture below.
The Riddle
After you enter the room circled on the map, head to the upper left-hand corner and approach the painting. After hitting the action button, you’ll be presented with a riddle that reads, “First there were only two hands. But the more we had, the more were willing to join. “
The Solution
Basically, we are thinking people and numbers here. There are 3 rows of paintings in this room, and you must select the correct paintings in the correct order. For our purposes, think of the row next to the door you entered in as row one, the middle as row two, and the row next to the painting with the riddle as row three. Each painting has a button under it, and we need to press some of them in a certain order, so let’s do that.
Head down to row one, on the right-hand side, and press the button under the painting with the women and the cow. Head to row three while staying on the right-hand side of the room and press the button under the painting with the two men. After that head to row two and find the painting in the middle with the three men on the boat and press that button. Next, you’ll need to head back up to row one and find the painting in the middle of that row with the three women and one man in a barn and press that button. Last, you’ll go back to the first row on the left-hand side and press the button under the five men.
If you’ve done all this correctly, the painting with the riddle will slide up revealing a green book. Make sure you pick it up for your next venture before you leave the room.
