A year ago developer Pocketpair was releasing their latest game, Palworld, into early access. It took the gaming world by storm and became one of the biggest success stories in awhile. So much so that they are now trying their hand as a game publisher to support another indie studio's latest game.

Today Pocketpair officially formed Pocketpair Publishing. Their first game will be a horror title from Surgent Studios, creators of last years excellent Tales Of Kenzera: Zau which won best indie game and best narrative at our Game Of The Year awards.
Why has Pocketpair decided to get into publishing? Well according to their website it's quite simple. Their statement reads:
Making games is fun and we want to help you make games too!
We understand the challenges of creating your dream game.
At Pocketpair, we've been fortunate to find success. Now, more than anything, we want to use that success to help other developers achieve theirs.
Making games is hard"”especially when you're going it alone.
That's why we've launched Pocketpair Publishing.
Surgent Studios Gets Support
While the news of Pocketpair branching out to publishing is interesting the bigger news, at least to me is the first studio they've signed on. Tales Of Kenzera: Zau was a fantastic game and it was published by EA's indie branch EA Originals. Unfortunately after release the studio had to make job cuts, so to see them get this new deal is a welcome piece of news.
What is interesting with this news however is that the game is a horror title. Not only is that a big change from Tales Of Kenzera: Zau which was a metroidvania, but it's also seemingly not (codename) Project Uso. Surgent announced Project Uso last year and called it an "Afro-gothic RPG" and that they were looking for a publisher.

Considering they called it a "short horror title" it could simply be a launching pad for their partnership before shifting focus back to Project Uso.
Either way it's an exciting day for both companies and gamers. Anytime a great indie studio can find funding for its next game is a win in my eyes.
