New Battlefield Details Revealed By Vince Zampella, Going Modern

Fans have been wondering what's next for the Battlefield franchise after EA announced they wouldn't be updating Battlefield 2042 anymore earlier this year and we now know a bit more about what to expect.

IGN has obtained info from EA's Vince Campella ahead of EA's investor call due tomorrow September 17th about details on the next Battlefield game along with some concept art. Likely the biggest piece of news is that the franchise will be heading back to a modern setting.

Battlefield will be returning to a modern setting

This appears to signal a more back to the basis approach of what made Battlefield the chief competitor for Call Of Duty in the late 2000s to mid 2010s and Campella says as much.

"I mean, if you look back to the peak or the pinnacle of Battlefield, it’s that Battlefield 3… Battlefield 4 era where everything was modern. And I think we have to get back to the core of what Battlefield is and do that amazingly well, and then we’ll see where it goes from there." Campella told IGN. "But I think for me, it’s that peak of Battlefield-ness is in that Battlefield 3 and 4 days. So I think it’s nostalgic for players, for me, for the teams even. Those are kind of the heyday…although I would say 1942 also.”

Other details include going back to 64 player matches. Ultimately what they are hoping is for Battlefield to be great out the gate once again. While Campella doesn't call 2042 a failure he does say he wants the next Battlefield to be good right away rather than launch in a lesser state and be made better.

Expect plenty of tanks and helicopters in the next Battlefield

"Yeah, it’s definitely betting bigger on Battlefield. It’s going in and expanding what Battlefield is. We have to have the core. The core Battlefield players know what they want. They’ve been with us forever, they’ve been amazing supporters. We need to earn their trust back and get them back on our side. And then it’s expanding out and getting more players into the universe and seeing what we can do, so when you want a different experience, you don’t have to leave Battlefield. You can experience more things within the Battlefield universe. So we’re expanding the offerings that we’re giving.”

We also know from previous announcements that the next Battlefield already has the biggest development team ever for the franchise so whatever the next iteration is EA is all in on the series. I can safely speak for many fans of the series that we hope it's Bad Company 3 with a fleshed out campaign, but that is likely more dream than realistic it seems.
