After 6 years and almost 40 updates, Undead Labs has decided it’s time to move on from State Of Decay 2 and get all hands on deck for State Of Decay 3.

The developer took to their website to issue a statement on the upcoming update to State Of Decay 2 (update #38) and declare that it will indeed be the last for the game. This does not mean the game is going offline or will no longer be playable, just no more updates will be coming. The update will be coming sometime later this year. Part of the statement reads:

“Since 2018, we’ve had the honor and privilege of supporting State of Decay 2 with nearly forty updates and expansions. New modes, maps, difficulties, stories, characters, weapons, cosmetics, bounties, vehicles, events, traits and more – we’ve poured our hearts into making the experience the best it can be, spurred on by your belief in us. Every update addressed your Wishlist requests, fixed bugs, and brought quality of life improvements. We love making the game you love to play.”

It’s been an impressive amount of work put in by Undead Labs over the years to get State Of Decay 2 where it is today. While the game launched in a good state they have continued to improve the game and provide players with tons of new content. The game is certainly one of Xbox’s biggest success stories from the Xbox One era. So much so that Xbox decided to purchase the studio.

State Of Decay 3 has already been in development for at least 4 years now having been announced at the Xbox showcase back in 2020. It went dark since then until this years showcase where we received a new look at the game. There is no word on how far along it is or how much of the studio has been working on it up to this point.

As part of todays announcement Undead Labs has said their goal is to “make the greatest zombie survival sim in the franchise”. If the trailers are any indication they may very well be on their way to accomplishing that as they appear to be a big graphical upgrade from the first 2 games.
