There's a lot of common things said about games that go to Xbox, especially ones that were out elsewhere first. "No one cares about an old port". "Without Game Pass it's got no chance". "A shooter that's not Call Of Duty or Fortnite?Who cares". Well apparently Hypercharge Unboxed is bucking all those trends.
Today the developers for the game announced that Hypercharge Unboxed has sold 50,000 copies in its first 5 days. Many will say that's a tiny number, but for an indie game it's incredible. As we've previously reported and can still confirm, this is the biggest launch yet for the game(it previously launched on Steam and Nintendo Switch). But how, and more importantly, why is this game getting so much hype and support?
For starters, the game itself is quite good. It's reviews from critics and players alike are very good and I can personally speak from experience that I'm having a blast with it. Good games tend to get more support. It's unique in a space that is as competitive as it gets. What else is there that looks and feels like Hypercharge?

It also hits at most gamers nostalgic feelings. Pretty much everyone in their childhood played with little army men at some point and turned their house into a battlefield. This is just reliving that in a cool video game.
Then there's the community aspect. Detractors will for some reason say it's cheap marketing, but it's 2024, if you aren't using influencers and community word of mouth you are doing marketing all wrong. The fact is the Xbox community has found a game they love and it's spreading like wildfire which has led to some crazy things. Even major non gaming outlets that only ever talk about gaming when it's call of duty or grand theft auto are tweeting about it.
Whether those posts turn into a big uptick in sales only time will tell, but for an indie game to be picked up by outlets like that is in and of itself a crazy accomplishment and shows just how great it's doing.

Perhaps the best part of all of this is how genuine and passionate the developers are and how well they connect with the community. You want to cheer for them because they feel like the rest of us. They wear their heart on their sleeve and it's so refreshing to see from a developer.
How long this wave lasts is anybody's guess, but for however long it does it's been a hell of a ride for all involved.
