On Monday British game developer Supermassive Games announced in a post on the social media platform X they would be entering into a period of "consultation" which they anticipate will result in the loss of employees.
According to a Bloomberg report, the company plans to lay off roughly 90 employees as part of the move, roughly 25% of their workforce of over 350 employees per their website.
"This is not a decision that's been taken lightly, with many efforts made to avoid this outcome," the company said in their statement.
Supermassive Games is known for their horror games such as Until Dawn & The Dark Pictures anthology, a series of stand-alone horror games. The company's most recent releases are The Devil in Me (2022) & Switchback VR on PSVR2 (2023).
In the statement the company referenced difficulties in the video game industry as a contributing factor to their decision.
"It's no secret that the games industry is currently facing significant challenges," they said. "Unfortunately, we aren't immune to this."
Despite the layoffs Supermassive reiterated their commitment to their upcoming projects.
"We're committed to focusing our efforts on our core strengths and upcoming titles to ensure the continued sustainability of the company," the release stated.
